Energy organisations are being asked to make faster, higher-confidence decisions in increasingly complex subsurface environments. Seequent’s acquisition of Eliis brings together complementary expertise in seismic interpretation, geological modelling, geophysics and data management—helping customers build a clearer, more connected understanding of their resources. Eliis is the developer of PaleoScan, an advanced seismic interpretation platform that combines patented Relative Geological Time (RGT) technology with AI-assisted workflows. Together, Seequent and Eliis have an opportunity to help energy teams interpret complex seismic data more efficiently, reduce uncertainty, and make better-informed decisions across conventional energy and for the energy transition.

Extending the subsurface workflow

Seequent’s solutions for geophysics, geological modelling, geotechnical analysis and data management help our customers understand the underground.

Geophysics is critical because it lets us see and measure the subsurface, supporting critical decisions, like where and how to drill.  Seequent already has robust offerings for the inversion of gravity, magnetic, electrical and electromagnetic data from geophysics. Eliis rounds out these capabilities with interpretation of 2D and 3D seismic reflection data, which can provide high-resolution subsurface imaging at kilometer-scale depth.

Supporting more geophysical methods improves our decision making, driving down drilling and other intensive operational costs associated with development and operation of energy assets. However, geophysical data alone doesn’t provide the full picture. Integration with geological, reservoir engineering and geochemical data provides a robust decision-making platform. In combination with Leapfrog’s powerful implicit modelling, faster basin to appraisal workflows will reduce the time to insight.

Global seismic expertise

Eliis brings more than seismic technology: it adds nearly 20 years of R&D and a globally recognised team of geoscientists, interpreters, technologists and researchers with deep experience solving complex subsurface challenges. Their expertise spans seismic interpretation, the relative geological-time (RGT) approach, automation and AI-assisted workflows—strengthening Seequent’s ability to accelerate innovation, extend seismic into new markets and help customers make better-informed subsurface decisions.

Complex interpretation for oil and gas

Seismic interpretation is one of the most important tools in oil and gas because it helps geoscientists turn areas of very limited hard data (and therefore high uncertainty) into a more certain understanding of the subsurface. It is central in the identification of hydrocarbon plays, reducing drilling risk, and optimising field development.

PaleoScan helps geoscientists work through large, complex seismic volumes and develop interpretations with greater speed, consistency and geological context. For Eliis customers, our priority is continuity of innovation. PaleoScan’s specialist team and product focus remain central, while supported by Seequent’s global reach, investment capacity and wider subsurface experience. Seequent has geophysics expertise, primarily in potential fields and electrical methods, it is also the leader in 3D geological modelling with Leapfrog. Over time PaleoScan customers may benefit from these extended subsurface workflows including multiphysics interpretations and implicit geological modelling.

Supporting an evolving energy landscape

The value of advanced seismic insight extends across the energy sector. Whether teams are developing established resources or evaluating lower-carbon opportunities, confident decisions depend on understanding complex geological systems and the uncertainty within them.

In Geothermal Seequent’s technology supports 9 of the top 10 operators globally and provides clarity from exploration to operation with our tailored subsurface solutions spanning non-seismic geophysics to geological modelling and fully coupled reservoir, wellbore and surface facilities modelling. The addition of seismic interpretation broadens the reach of these industry leading tools and workflows, enabling geothermal in different geological settings and technology approaches.

Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS) projects require robust screening workflows that can work with or without the level of detail normally available in oil and gas. PaleoScan helps companies quickly evaluate deep saline aquifers or depleted reservoirs. PaleoScan de-risks safe long-term containment by employing advanced fault detection workflows to identify subtle fracture zones that could cause leaks, while verifying the continuous lateral integrity of overlying caprock seals. Once an injection site is operational, the software supports mandatory regulatory compliance through 4D time-lapse seismic interpretation and anomaly detection, allowing geoscientists to track the underground migration of the CO₂ plume to ensure it remains permanently and safely trapped. Seequent’s other geophysical capabilities complement this by providing a detailed understanding of overlying aquifers (which need to be understood and monitored once projects are in operation), detection of abandoned wells, and monitoring utilising gravity. Combined with robust geological modelling our workflows provide a full integrated picture from reservoir to surface.

Similar subsurface insight is important for underground hydrogen exploration and storage, direct lithium extraction and offshore wind. This same group of technology provides a flexible and robust solution to understanding and delineating the subsurface.

By bringing PaleoScan alongside Leapfrog Energy, Oasis montaj, Volsung and Evo, Seequent is expanding the range of subsurface challenges it can help customers address—from seismic interpretation and geophysics to geological modelling, reservoir simulation and collaborative decision-making.

Towards more connected subsurface workflows

Our approach will be practical and customer-led. Today, PaleoScan and Seequent solutions exchange data through point connections. Future connections will be shaped by clear customer value, technical validation and the need to work effectively within existing energy technology environments.

Openness will remain essential. Customers need choice and flexibility across established platforms, data architectures and systems of record. The goal is to make subsurface information more usable and connected without adding unnecessary disruption or complexity.

Continuity today, greater opportunity tomorrow

Customers can expect a measured evolution. Near-term priorities are continuity, reliable support and ongoing product development. Seequent will protect the specialist expertise and responsiveness that have made Eliis successful while giving the team access to greater scale and resources.

Over time, we see opportunities to co-develop workflows that help geoscientists reduce repetitive work, interpret data faster and carry geological understanding more consistently into modelling and decision-making. We will share more as these opportunities are validated with customers.

What will not change is our commitment to open, trusted subsurface solutions and to working closely with customers on the problems that matter most.
