Stereonets can be challenging for many students to visualise.

Learn how Dr. Kate Pedley, Geology Lecturer at the University of Canterbury (New Zealand) has integrated Visible Geology, a free earth science education tool, into her coursework to enhance her student’s understanding of stereonets with 3D visualisation.
In this presentation, Kate walks through examples of exercises she uses with her second-year structural geology students, including:
  • Plotting a plane and pole on a basic stereonet and visualising what that represents in 3D
  • Working with multiple planes, looking for patterns and making extra inferences about how they relate to each other
  • Finding Sigma 1, 2 and 3 on conjugate faults
