Digital integration boosts safety, productivity and sustainability at Anglo American mine

Anglo American addressed significant geotechnical data challenges at its Barro Alto nickel mine in Brazil by implementing a digital integration project to enhance safety, productivity, and sustainability. The initiative tackled problems stemming from disconnected, manual, and error-prone risk management processes. By utilizing Seequent’s Leapfrog Geo for dynamic 3D modeling and Seequent Central and Bentley’s ProjectWise for data management, the company created a unified and reliable system.

This new workflow resulted in a 75% reduction in the time needed to update geomechanical models and increased projected ore recovery by an estimated 120% to 140%. The project represents a “paradigm shift” in the industry, significantly improving operational safety, reducing environmental risks, and establishing a scalable model for technical excellence in mining. This innovative approach was recognized as a finalist in the 2025 Going Digital Awards in Infrastructure.
