Seequent recently hosted Ambassador of Mexico to New Zealand, H.E. José Gerardo Traslosheros Hernández at our global headquarters in Christchurch to discuss strong market growth and future opportunities in Mexico.

“Mexico is a very attractive and engaging market. Its rich natural resource base and renewable energy potential is attracting foreign investment and creating new opportunities. Renewable energy is a great example; as with other countries, Mexico is embracing the importance of developing geothermal not just as an energy replacement source, but to future proof base load energy needs for the future,” Chief Executive Shaun Maloney says.

“Mexico is one of our fastest growing markets and represents a great opportunity as the world’s 13th largest economy. We’re continuing to invest in people and skills in the region.”

H.E. Traslosheros Hernández said he was: “impressed by the innovation component of New Zealand business. Mexico’s wide variety of natural resources, skilled workforce and proximity to some of the largest consumption areas provides a lot of opportunity between Mexico and New Zealand.  We can improve our ability to respond to new demands and build our competitive position by connecting with technology innovators, like Seequent.”

Seequent technology is contributing to the modelling, understanding and management of geological risks for earth, environment and energy projects in 85 countries around the globe. The mining sector in particular plays an important role in our business in Mexico and many of the top mining operators are our customers.

“We have a long link with Mexico. Mining operations in Mexico are great adopters of innovation and were among the first supporters of our software globally,” says Seequent’s GM Mining and Minerals Nick Fogarty.

“While, mining has experienced a once in a generation downturn over the past few years, we’ve still experienced market growth.  We’re now seeing more activity as commodity prices increase and the market starts to recover.  Increased investment in natural resource exploration is driving mining operations to adopt innovative technology that helps drive both efficiency and sustainability.”

Renewable energy development in Mexico is also generating new opportunities. H.E. Traslosheros Hernández says, “Mexico is responding to global energy challenges by developing new renewable energy sources. In terms of geothermal energy, we already have a number of geothermal power stations, and new developments are underway.”

Jeremy O’Brien, Seequent’s Geothermal Business Manager, says: “The energy market in Mexico is really opening up on the back of landmark reforms. This is driving demand for more diversified and cleaner energy resources. We’re already working with some of the largest geothermal companies and look forward to supporting the development of new geothermal assets to add capacity.”
