Open pit surface mining often results in large mined rock stockpiles (MRS) consisting of potentially reactive materials.

These materials increase the risk of high internal MRS temperatures and acid metalliferous drainage, posing a substantial environmental and human health and safety risk if not properly constructed, managed, and rehabilitated. Okane used GeoStudios to develop a quasi-3D model of the dump and show that waste placement was the most important factor in managing risks associated with the MRS. This brought long-terms savings and risk reduction for the client.
