Eating 3D Geological Models for Earth Day

Earth Day is about raising awareness of global issues affecting the environment and the planet. This year’s theme was plastic pollution - an enormous global problem threatening marine animals and ecosystems, as well as human health.

So to recognise Earth Day and raise awareness (and a little money), we hosted a geological modelling cake bake off across all our global offices. The brief was simple: make a cake based on a geological model, and don't use any single-use, disposable plastic in the creation or presentation of the cake.

   We specialise in helping our users create dynamic, accurate models of the earth’s subsurface. And you’d be surprised how often these models look like cake or edible confectionery.

We held the competition on Friday 20th rolling across eight timezones, starting in our head office in Christchurch, New Zealand. As the biggest office, we had the most entries. (Left to right: Geothermal power plant, Jurassic park, Christchurch flatland, Earth)

Then as it became cake time on Friday in each office, the finalists were determined and uploaded for judging. Here they all are.

Winners

One winner was nominated in each office, then Vancouver (as the last timezone) ultimately judged. A tough decision, though so joint winners were awarded to South Africa for their Diatreme cake, and Vancouver team for their replication of the Seagan Valley.

Congratulations to all the bakers. Every single entry was so creative, detailed and impressive. The thought and effort was astounding. Everybody “nailed it” and everybody won!

It was a delicious and fun way for us to participate in Earth Day, come together as a global team (and cake rivals), be creative and eat. It was also our CEO Shaun Maloney’s birthday, by coincidence, and he did not mind the cake overflow at all.

All money raised on the day was donated to the Plastic Pollution Coalition who's mission is to stop plastic pollution and its toxic impact on humans, animals and the environment.
